Alonovo.com

Seeing a new square on the right-hand side of Zaadz.com is always a fun event.  This time it was Alonovo.  Strange name, cool graphic, so I decided to check it out.  What a great idea!!  Alonovo is esentially a gateway to Amazon.com.  Whatever you can find on Amazon.com, you can find at Alonovo.  The cool part is that whatever you purchase through the Alonovo gateway gets your favorite charity a nice little donation.  Alonovo gets a little money from Amazon for sending you their way, and 50-100% of that money is donated to your charity!  How cool is that!

What a great idea!  I personally make a few bucks now and then from a few websites that I run by being part of this Amazon Affiliate program, so I know that it does add up.  So if you are going to purchase something from Amazon, you might as well get your charity or other mindful organization (such as Zaadz) a few bucks while you're at it!

They've also got a Zaadz profile!

What do you love most about your work?

Posted on Jun 2nd, 2007 by Phil : Teacher Phil
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 02, 2007:

Ban1
As a teacher, composer, and dharma web designer, what I love most about my work is being able to interact with children.  This past year was my first year as an elementary teacher.  At first I was pretty apprehensive about it since I never saw myself as much of a kid person, but once I settled in, I found it to be the best job I've ever had!

At the private school I teach at, I teach Pre-K - 6th grade students how to sing, play piano, and starting next year, record music and edit film.  Fine arts is such a fantastic way to engage students and I'm glad that my school sees the tremendous value in it.  Seeing the kids really lightup and enjoy creating art is amazing.  Unfortunately many public schools don't have the resources to support these programs (due mostly to the President's "No Child Left Behind" program and other pressures), so I highly recommend giving to your local school's fine arts programs or national programs such as Save the Music.

I am truly fortunate to have this livelihood and I hope that you have one as well.  If not, look around, I'm sure there are great positions just perfect for you, don't give up!

What's your favorite chore?

Posted on Jun 11th, 2007 by Phil : Teacher Phil
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 11, 2007:

My favorite chore is definitely sweeping.  I'm currently in a small one bedroom apartment with hardwood floors that usually requires tons of sweeping.  It's a great lesson on impermanence.  No matter how clean you get the floors, as soon as you turn around they get dirty and require more attention.  Starting again and again is great practice!

Safari does Windows

Good news Windows users! You can now download Safari (Apple's internet browser) for use on Windows XP & Vista. Unfortunately Zaadz doesn't seem too compatible with Safari 3 Beta, but as people gobble up iPhones (which use Safari), maybe the Zaadz gods will get that fixed. UPDATE: Zaadz's rich text editor now works with Safari 3, see Jake's comment below. Download Safari 3 Beta here: http://www.apple.com/safari/

Midsummer dayz

Posted on Jun 23rd, 2007 by Phil : Teacher Phil
Summer is in full swing for this teacher, and yet, I seem to be more busy than during the regular school year!  Along with moving out of my apartment, wrapping up some final things for the wedding, I've gotten a few more gigs designing a few websites and building a brand new music and film studio for the private school I teach at.  You may have also noticed my lovely new zPro Zaadz page.  I have added the last bits of spackle on the design and have made it the new "philcastillo.com" - so that's pretty neat!  I am thankful to the Zaadz tech godz for giving me the opportunity to showcase their new baby and hope zPro is a success for them!

I've been on a Netflix documentary blitz - check out Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Word Play, good stuff!

Young Americans are leaning left

Posted on Jun 27th, 2007 by Phil : Teacher Phil
The article below from the New York Times shows that the Americans they polled, aged 17-29, are leaning left.  A little hope I think :)  One interesting thing to note is their sunny outlook of what's to come in Iraq.  This 27-year-old is not quite that optimistic.

From NYTimes.com:

Young Americans are more likely than the general public to favor a government-run universal health care insurance system, an open-door policy on immigration and the legalization of gay marriage, according to a New York Times/CBS News/MTV poll. The poll also found that they are more likely to say the war in Iraq is heading to a successful conclusion.

The poll offers a snapshot of a group whose energy and idealism have always been as alluring to politicians as its scattered focus and shifting interests have been frustrating. It found that substantially more Americans ages 17 to 29 than four years ago are paying attention to the presidential race. But they appeared to be really familiar with only two of the candidates, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, both Democrats.

They have continued a long-term drift away from the Republican Party. And although they are just as worried as the general population about the outlook for the country and think their generation is likely to be worse off than that of their parents, they retain a belief that their votes can make a difference, the poll found.

More than half of Americans ages 17 to 29 — 54 percent — say they intend to vote for a Democrat for president in 2008. They share with the public at large a negative view of President Bush, who has a 28 percent approval rating with this group, and of the Republican Party. They hold a markedly more positive view of Democrats than they do of Republicans.

Among this age group, Mr. Bush’s job approval rating after the attacks of Sept. 11 was more than 80 percent. Over the course of the next three years, it drifted downward leading into the presidential election of 2004, when 4 of 10 young Americans said they approved how Mr. Bush was handling his job.

At a time when Democrats have made gains after years in which Republicans have dominated Washington, young Americans appear to lean slightly more to the left than the general population: 28 percent described themselves as liberal, compared with 20 percent of the nation at large. And 27 percent called themselves conservative, compared with 32 percent of the general public.

Forty-four percent said they believed that same-sex couples should be permitted to get married, compared with 28 percent of the public at large. They are more likely than their elders to support the legalization of possession of small amounts of marijuana.

The findings on gay marriage were reminiscent of an exit poll on Election Day 2004: 41 percent of 18-to-29-year-old voters said gay couples should be permitted to legally marry, according to the exit poll.

In the current poll, 62 percent said they would support a universal, government-sponsored national health care insurance program; 47 percent of the general public holds that view. And 30 percent said that “Americans should always welcome new immigrants,” while 24 percent of the general public holds that view.
